SANKOFA MUSIC IMMERSION

Sankofa Music Immersion is a study abroad program with the purpose of teaching traditional music, drumming and dance originating from Ghana. Attendees will immerse in the rich culture, traveling and experience the natives and traditions. Our goal is to create cultural bridges between people and communities worldwide through a shared loved of music and the arts. Our programs reflect our dedication to our mission and to the communities we serve, both in the U.S. and in Ghana.

Sankofamusicimmersion founder, Kwame Ahima is an Adjunct Faculty member at the Blair School of Music since 2000. He is a master of the Asante Talking Drums of Ghana; Founder and Artistic Director, Sogo Dance Ensemble; Founder and instructor, Sogo Youth Performing Ensemble; Manager, Nana-Nom Ensemble (West Africa); Drum and Dance Instructor, Global Education Center (Nashville); Master drummer, Odomankoma Kyerema Cultural Troupe.

Mr. Ahima is still active in the classroom, working with adults, youth and conducting residencies and workshops in colleges, universities and K-12 schools nationwide.

Sankofa

An Akan term, Sankofa means “return and retrieve” — that is, one must return to the past, to one’s roots, in order to move forward. Sankofa is typically represented by a bird whose head faces the opposite direction of its body, looking toward the future while still firmly rooted in the past.
